In 1974, just three years after being founded, DCI hired its first transplant coordinator. By the time the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) was awarded the contract for maintenance of a national registry for organ matching in 1986, DCI had already coordinated more than 600 kidney transplants. DCI now operates three Organ Procurement Organizations (OPOs) that connect the life-saving gifts of organ, eye and tissue donors to those who need them most.
